At Magna Vitae, we often celebrate transformation. But not every journey is about instant results or dramatic change…

Some of the most powerful stories are the quieter ones — the ones still unfolding, week by week. Susan’s journey at Station Leisure & Learning Centre in Mablethorpe is one of those.

For more than 40 years, Susan lived with a fear of water that stemmed from a childhood incident where she and a friend were unexpectedly pushed into water. It left a lasting mark.

“Every time I got near water, I panicked…I’d imagine myself going under.”

For decades, that fear kept her away from the water. Swimming wasn’t something she ever thought she’d return to.

Slow & steady

That began to change when Station Leisure opened and Susan decided — quietly, cautiously — to try again. With her devoted husband Tony beside her, she made a small but important decision: just get in the pool. No expectations. Just try.

“I started by holding the side and just walking along…Taking deep breaths. Trying to stay calm. Just being in the water without panicking was a big deal.”

This time, something was different. A kind woman in the pool offered quiet encouragement. Over time, Susan began to feel a little more at ease. Bit by bit, breath by breath, she started letting go of the wall.

She’s now even done 12 strokes on her own and all Sue’s friends in the pool at the time were there to give a big cheer of support!

“I still have my moments,” Sue says, laughing. “But I try not to be negative — I try my best to always be positive!”

One big swim ‘family’

One of the biggest changes this time isn’t just in Susan — it’s in the people around her.

Susan and Tony have become part of a close-knit swim group they now call their “swim family.” What started as casual chats poolside has grown into lasting friendships.

“We go for coffee after our swims at the Whistle Stop Café, we’ve been to Ireland together — it’s become a big part of our lives…It’s just genuine…People actually care.” Susan says.

It’s ‘showing up’ that counts…

Susan hasn’t conquered her fear. She still feels that dread every time she steps into the water, and she might be working on it for many more years. And that’s okay. Because the real victory is that she’s still showing up. She’s still getting in the pool. Still trying. And that counts for more than anything.

At Magna Vitae, we believe in celebrating those kinds of victories too — the quiet, determined ones. The ones built on patience, persistence and support.

Always remember: the person next to you might be facing a fear, building confidence, or simply trying something new. Don’t judge — offer encouragement, patience, or even just a smile. A little support can make all the difference.

If you’ve got something holding you back, maybe now is the time to take that first step. You don’t have to do it alone.
