National Rescue Award for Teachers and Coaches

Picture this: You are teaching your class of 12 swimmers when, all of a sudden, one of them requires emergency assistance in the water. Unfortunately the Lifeguard is already busy dealing with another matter. So who will rescue the struggling swimmer?

These situations can, and do, happen. As a swimming teacher or coach, you should be able to help when someone needs emergency assistance in the water.

The National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches (NRASTC) qualification provides you with the necessary rescue and first aid skills you will need to make sure everybody is safe in your swimming lessons at all times.

This qualification is endorsed by a number of national bodies including the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management and the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches. It is also recognised in ‘Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools’ as being appropriate for those supervising programmed activities.

You will study for a total of 14 hours before completing your assessment. You will need to renew your qualification every 2 years to refresh your skills and learn any new information.

What will you learn?

You will learn all of the skills and knowledge needed to be competent to care for your swimmers whilst teaching them.

The course is split into 3 sections:

  1. The teacher, swimming pool and class management.
  2. Intervention rescues and emergency action.
  3. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.

Swimming Teacher Qualifications

Magna Vitae is an Approved Training Centre for Swim England Qualifications operating out of Meridian Leisure Centre, Louth.

Our Swimming Development Manager, Hollie Field (Nee Wells), will be delivering Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) and Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualifications.

Hollie qualified as a Tutor for Swim England in August 2014 and worked for the Institute of Swimming until September 2016. She delivered the above qualifications and various CPD’s within that time; covering the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire. Since starting her employment with Magna Vitae staff training and development has been top priority, therefore we can ensure our Swimming Teachers are kept up to date with industry standards. The Approved Training Centre status has now given us the opportunity to further develop our current staff and allowed us to expand this to members of the public who are looking to pursue a career as a Swimming Assistant or Teacher.
