Here at Magna Vitae, we are passionate about creating opportunities that support the health and wellbeing of our community.

At the end of last year, we introduced more inclusive sessions across our leisure venues, designed to make physical activity accessible to as many people as possible. One of these sessions is Supported Swim.

Supported Swim is designed for anyone who needs extra space, time and support in the pool. These sessions offer a calm and welcoming environment where people can move at their own pace, whether that means walking in the water, doing gentle exercises, or simply using the resistance of the pool to build strength.

A qualified member of staff is always present to offer guidance and reassurance. The sessions are suitable for people with mobility issues, those managing chronic pain, individuals recovering from surgery, or anyone who feels nervous about swimming. Many people use Supported Swim to improve strength, confidence and wellbeing in a low-impact, non-invasive way.

Exercising in water can be especially helpful for those living with pain. The water supports the body, reduces pressure on joints and makes movement easier and more comfortable than on land. This allows people to stay active without putting extra strain on their bodies.

For Irene, Supported Swim has made a real difference.

Nearly 80, Irene lives with long-term health conditions, mobility challenges and daily pain. When she first heard about the sessions through a friend, she was waiting for a hip operation and looking for ways to stay active safely. Traditional exercise felt difficult, but being in the water gave her the confidence to try again.

At first, she did too much and quickly realised she needed to listen to her body. Over time, she found the right balance. Now, she enjoys the Supported Swim sessions which help her to stay mobile without overdoing it.

Because of paralysis on one side, Irene cannot swim in the traditional sense. Instead, she focuses on simple movements and using the water for support. The pool allows her to move more freely, helping her manage pain and maintain strength.

She has also seen improvements in her friends who attend. Some feel stronger, more confident and better prepared for hospital appointments and physiotherapy. Others are slowly rebuilding strength after surgery.

For Irene, Supported Swim is about more than just exercise. It is also a chance to connect with others who understand what it is like to live with pain or mobility issues. During the sessions, people often have a chat, offering encouragement and support to one another.

She now regularly encourages others to try the sessions.

Many people worry they are not fit enough, too slow, or will be in the way. Irene wants them to know that Supported Swim is designed for everyone to go at their own pace, without pressure or judgement.

“It’s about doing what you can,” she says. “And that’s enough.”

Supported Swim has helped Irene stay active, despite ongoing health challenges. She believes that if more people knew about the sessions, many more could benefit.

For anyone living with pain, recovering from surgery, or looking for a gentle way to stay active, Supported Swim offers a supportive and positive place to start.
