For Amy, the pool at our venue in Mablethorpe isn’t just a place to swim — it’s a space to breathe, reset and simply be herself!
When Amy first heard that a new swimming pool was being built in Mablethorpe, she followed its progress online with excitement. “I hadn’t swum for about twenty years,” she recalls. “I used to train seriously when I was younger — 100 lengths was just a warm-up! But life got busy, and without a local pool, it was hard to keep it up.”
That all changed when Station Leisure & Learning Centre opened just down the road. “Having a pool on my doorstep inspired me to get back into swimming,” Amy says. “I came on day one —I just wanted to get a feel for the place.”

Swimming for the mind, not just the body
At first, Amy set out to rebuild her fitness. But after an injury, she re-evaluated what swimming really meant to her.
“I realised I wasn’t doing it for fitness — I swim for my mental health. I only stay in for ten or fifteen minutes, but it makes such a difference. It’s not about pushing myself; it’s about how it makes me feel.”
For Amy, swimming offers a sense of freedom and focus. “It’s like flying underwater. You’re in your own world — calm, quiet and weightless. It’s a great stress relief, and it helps me feel grounded.”
Making space for everyone
As someone who is neurodiverse, Amy values calm, predictable environments — something the team at Station Leisure & Learning Centre has worked hard to provide.
“I can get stressed if things don’t go to plan — like if there’s supposed to be two lanes out and there’s only one,” she explains. “But the management here really listen. When I give feedback, they respond and make changes. That means so much.”
One moment that stands out for Amy was when the lifeguards noticed she was struggling during a busy session. “They asked if I’d like a bit more space and actually rearranged things for ten minutes so I could finish my swim peacefully. That was so inclusive and thoughtful — it really made my day.”
Amy appreciates that staff now understand her routine and support her to enjoy her swims in her own way. “They know I’m not being rude when I just come in, do my swim, and go. They get me — and that makes me feel comfortable.”
Taking it one step at a time
Amy’s advice for others who may find busy public spaces overwhelming is to take it slowly.
“Don’t rush yourself. If you’re not ready to jump straight in, start small — maybe just come for a coffee or look around the building. You’ll get there in your own time.”
Even small challenges — like remembering her parking permit — are part of Amy’s ongoing journey to build routine and confidence. “It’s all part of learning what works for me,” she says. “The staff are brilliant at understanding that everyone’s different.”
A place to belong
What shines through Amy’s story is not just her rediscovery of swimming, but the sense of belonging she’s found in her local leisure centre.
“Swimming is my time to unwind,” she says. “It’s only ten minutes, but it makes such a difference to my week. It’s helped my mental health and given me something positive to focus on.”
At Station Leisure & Learning Centre, Amy has found more than a pool — she’s found support, understanding and a space to live her version of a great life.
At Magna Vitae, we’re proud to have welcoming, inclusive venues where everyone, whatever their needs or goals, can feel supported to live well and thrive.
