For Billie, that was the case for years. But one small change set her on a journey to transformation…

“Me being the stubborn person that I am, I said ‘I am not joining, I’m not doing it!’”
But one month later, she walked through the doors. No big plan, no pressure—just a quiet decision to try.
“And that was kind of it, I just started slow, came in and did a few bits and just got into it. I noticed I was then losing a lot of weight, which is not why I first got into it.”

Finding Her Fit…
Billie didn’t join to lose weight—her goal was to feel better inside.
“I looked in the mirror and thought I am not seeing who I feel on the inside!”
As a single mum, time for herself was scarce, but she knew exercise could be one thing she could change. Over the months, she kept coming back, discovering her own way to move and improve her wellbeing.
Supported by a welcoming environment, Billie’s journey has led to almost seven stone lost and a transformation in confidence.
“I can’t remember being that person and I was that person for a long time. It has changed me as a Mum, which is the reason why I wanted to do it.”
Her increased confidence has even helped her progress at work.
“I know that I walk in a room and value myself.”

Finding Strength…
Billie quickly realised that cardio wasn’t for her.
“The first couple of months I did go on the treadmill and bike and thought, I hate this!”
Instead, she discovered a love for weight training. With help from her dad, who has bodybuilding experience and encouragement from Magna Vitae’s friendly fitness team, she built the strength to lift her son into bed—something she couldn’t do when he broke his wrist, which she made it her mission to achieve!
“It is those little things. I am on my own and if something needs doing, I can do it. It gives me independence.”

Fitting Fitness into Real Life
There’s no strict routine for Billie. Some days it’s an hour, others just 20 minutes squeezed in between work, school runs and kids’ clubs.
“I keep my gym clothes in my car so I come from work, get changed and blast out whatever I can do!”
If she can’t make it to the leisure centre, she works out at home after her son is asleep. She’s also joined group classes, taken part in a virtual running challenge and enjoys swimming with her son—making the most of the wide range of activities Magna Vitae offers to help people find their fit.
Billie’s journey has inspired her mum to stay active and now they enjoy long walks together. Her mum is fitter, more energetic and able to enjoy playing with the grandchildren.
Lifestyle Consultant Liezi’s encouragement has been key to her progress. Billie loves that Magna Vitae is a place where everyone feels comfortable.
“I have been to other gyms, but I like that here there is such a variety of people. I can bring my Mum, Dad and sister and none of us feel out of place. My son comes swimming with me, and we will have lunch, me and my friend coming swimming and we catch up in the sauna. It is such a lovely space.”

Why It’s More Than Fitness
For Billie, the leisure centre is now a part of life, not a phase.
“If I don’t come for a week I can just feel the difference in myself, I don’t feel settled I don’t sleep as well. It is like therapy.”
She follows a vegetarian diet, has found what works for her, and still enjoys her Saturday night pizza. And her advice to others is simple:
“Just start and it will take you to the place you need to be. Do something, just move your body. There is so much advice out there and it makes it seem like it is so overcomplicated! But just do anything that works for you.”
