Flag football came to East Lindsey this summer — and it was a huge hit within our School’s Out programme!
As one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and now officially part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games for both men and women, flag football proved to be a dynamic, inclusive and non-contact sport that children of all ages really enjoyed.
What is Flag Football?
Flag football is a safer, non-contact version of American football. Instead of tackling, players wear flags on their hips that defenders must pull to stop their progress. It’s fast-paced, fun and easy to pick up — making it a fantastic way for children to stay active, learn teamwork and build confidence.
With the sport gaining momentum globally and its Olympic debut on the horizon, it was the perfect time to introduce young people to flag football.

Backed by the NFL Flag Schools Programme
The NFL has been driving flag football’s growth across the UK through its NFL Flag Schools Programme, providing resources, training, and equipment to schools and activity providers. Here in Lincolnshire, we were proud to be part of that movement.
After seeing Active Lincolnshire promote the programme on social media, Liam Fay, our Sport & Physical Activity Development Officer, jumped at the chance to get involved. He attended a dedicated workshop run by Lincolnshire Bombers American Football Youth and Lincolnshire Bombers American Football Club, giving him the skills and knowledge to roll out flag football through our School’s Out initiative.

“It was great to attend a workshop to learn more about flag football. I was really excited to introduce this new and exciting sport to East Lindsey through our School’s Out Programme.”

Flag Football at School’s Out!
chariTo make sure the experience was fun and engaging for all, Liam ran a training session for our School’s Out coaching team so they were ready to deliver high-energy flag football sessions throughout the summer holidays.
This exciting addition sat alongside our existing School’s Out activities — giving children even more opportunities to get active, try something new, and make the most of their summer break.

Flag football was a fantastic part of this year’s programme, and the children loved getting involved. With its Olympic debut ahead, we’re proud to have given them the chance to experience this fast-growing sport first-hand.
