When Mablethorpe welcomed back its first swimming pool in decades, it marked more than just a ribbon-cutting moment.

For a town ranked among the top 10% of most deprived areas in England, and where many had never learned to swim, it was the start of something bigger—a chance to improve wellbeing, build confidence and foster connection.

That’s why, since opening in July 2024, Magna Vitae has worked closely with partners and the local community to shape programmes that truly meet people’s needs. Supported Swim sessions are one of the most heartfelt examples of this.

Launched in September, these sessions were designed with inclusivity at their core. Whether someone has a health condition, limited mobility, sight loss, or simply hasn’t swum in years, everyone is welcomed into a calm, understanding and supportive space.

So far, 73 different individuals have taken part in the 43 sessions held. On average, around 10 people attend each time—though some have become real regulars, attending 20, 30 or more sessions. What unites them is the atmosphere: relaxed, welcoming, and encouraging.

Trained staff are in the water to help, offer tips and most importantly, make people feel safe. People come for different reasons: to rebuild confidence, for light exercise, or to take that first step back into physical activity after illness or injury. Some participants are returning to the pool after long absences—people who hadn’t swum in years. Others are registered blind and feel more comfortable in this quieter setting. For many, it’s about moving freely, easing pain and enjoying a social chat.

Members of the ‘Fighting Fit’ cancer support group have found it to be a valuable way to stay active on their own terms.

It’s been a real privilege to support individuals through these sessions. Many come along with barriers that have held them back for years—whether physical, emotional or simply confidence-based. To see them grow, week by week, in such a supportive environment has been incredibly rewarding.”

More than just swims…

they’re stepping stones

They’ve already helped some participants move into other activities like aqua classes or general swims. And along the way, friendships are being made, stories shared and barriers broken.

Supported Swims reflect the best of what community-led leisure can be: thoughtful, inclusive and built around people’s real lives.
