Last week, our team participated in National Beach Clean Week, which ran from the 23rd to the 29th of September. Led by our dedicated Environmental Champions, a group made up of both staff and customers headed out to the beautiful beaches of Mablethorpe and Skegness. Armed with gloves, litter pickers, and plenty of enthusiasm, the team worked together to collect litter and debris that has washed ashore or been left behind.
Protecting Our Coasts One Bag of Litter at a Time
While the task of cleaning up beaches is vital, this event was about more than just removing waste. As we scoured the shorelines, discussions focused on the harmful effects of pollution on our coastal ecosystems and the importance of maintaining these spaces for both wildlife and local communities. Our team learned how plastics, in particular, can break down into harmful microplastics, threatening marine life and contaminating food chains, even impacting our own health.
The benefits of beach clean-ups extend far beyond aesthetics. Keeping our beaches clean helps reduce the risk of injuries to beachgoers and wildlife, prevents hazardous materials from re-entering the ocean, and contributes to a healthier environment overall.
It’s a collective effort that makes a tangible difference—both locally and globally.
By the end of the day, not only did we leave the beaches cleaner, but we also left more informed and inspired to continue spreading awareness about protecting our coastal environments. The sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment was powerful, and we discussed ways everyone can help minimise their impact—whether by reducing plastic usage, recycling responsibly, or joining future clean-up efforts!
Our beaches are a vital part of our ecosystem, and small actions can lead to significant changes. Let’s all do our part to protect them for future generations.
