Report from Louth ‘Dolphins’ Swimming Club
Sportsman’s Week ran for 42 years and was originally started in 1953 by the former Mayor Frank McDonald to mark the Queen’s Coronation that year. It folded in its original form at the end of 1994, when unfortunately, there was no presentations or awards evening.
To enter you had to live within a 10-mile radius of Louth and the events included were
- Short Tennis
- .22 Rifle shooting
- Tennis
- Bowls
- Angling (all ages)
- Badminton
- Athletics (8miles & 2 ½ miles)
- Table Tennis
- Angling
- Gymkhana
- Half Marathon & a 4-mile fun run
- Clay Pigeon Shoot
- Swimming Gala
- Cycling (10 & 5 miles)
- Pool
- Golf
- Athletics
- Squash
- Darts
- Sea Angling
- Tennis
- 5 a side football
In 1996 Bob Wells, as the Chairman of Louth Swimming Club, took ownership of the swimming trophies with a promise to keep the swimming event going!
The event is in effect a second club camps and embraces Louth history of holding Sportsman’s Week events (the club believes they are the only one still using the original trophies)
So, this was the 68th event – 28 years organised by the club.
