Mental Health Awareness Week is a great time to think about how different activities can help improve our mental and physical wellbeing.
One person who has experienced the transformative power of fitness is Claire Hooton, a member at Magna Vitae’s Station Leisure & Learning Centre in Mablethorpe. Claire’s journey shows how taking care of your body can have a big impact on your mind and how smart technology can both help you, and keep you motivated, along the way.
Claire’s story begins during a tough period in her life. After a challenging Christmas, she found herself at a complete low. Her daughter, recognising she needed help and the mental health benefits of exercise, encouraged her to try going to the gym. Initially sceptical, Claire decided to give it a try in January, hoping it might help her feel better.
Upon starting her fitness journey, Claire was introduced to the EGYM equipment and she was intrigued by its smart technology. She started with the EGYM circuit, quickly seeing positive changes in her body. Encouraged by the results, Claire expanded her workouts to include cardio and other resistance machines.
“I love how you have it on your phone and you can track your progress, it is so good!”
At first, Claire didn’t think she had lost any weight, but after a body scan on the EGYM system, she was amazed at the changes—particularly in fat percentage and muscle mass and she was even more chuffed by her decrease in bio-age and strength.

“I am really enjoying it; it has properly lifted my mood. It has made me feel like how I used to feel!”
Claire has now lost a stone, and with it, her outlook on life has shifted. She feels more energised and confident, with a renewed sense of positivity. “I don’t know how it has worked its magic, but it really has…” The gym has not only improved her fitness but also helped her reclaim a sense of wellbeing.
A standout feature of the EGYM experience for Claire has been its integration with the app, which tracks her workouts and challenges her to push further.
“I like the Pacman!”
Though Claire once considered herself a technophobe, she found the technology simple to use with guidance from the supportive staff. “The staff here are really, really good. If you are ever unsure, you can just grab one of them and they will be able to help!”

Claire’s journey is a great example of how exercise can support mental health. Research supports this, showing that regular physical activity can be just as effective as therapy for treating mild to moderate depression.
The Journal of Clinical Psychology reports that physical activity can reduce depression symptoms by up to 30%.
The Mental Health Foundation also highlights that exercise boosts self-esteem, reduces anxiety and improves mood—making it an essential tool for maintaining mental health.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to emphasise how fitness, like it did for Claire, can positively impact mental wellbeing. Whether you’re starting your fitness journey or seeking a new challenge, reach out to any of our venues and our staff will be happy to guide you.
