Sixteen years ago, Malcolm began a remarkable journey toward reclaiming his health and rediscovering his strength… But his story truly began a year earlier, when his life took an unexpected turn.

Seventeen years ago, Malcolm suffered a stroke that severely impacted the right side of his body. In November of that year, he was hospitalised and didn’t return home until January. During those dark months, his family and doctors weren’t sure if he would make it.

Thankfully, Malcolm recovered and returned home, determined to fight back. He started with physiotherapy and was later referred to the Exercise on Prescription programme by his doctor. For Malcolm, exercise wasn’t just a form of rehabilitation—it was a way of life.

Martial Arts: A Lifelong Passion…

What kept Malcolm motivated and grounded throughout his recovery was his lifelong dedication to martial arts. A practitioner for 57 years, Malcolm continues to run a martial arts club to this day. Before his stroke, he had always worked in gyms and martial arts, and he wasn’t a stranger to fitness or exercise. He also spent 20 years as a P.E. teacher and caretaker in Skegness, the town where he was born and raised.

After his initial recovery, Malcolm remained committed to staying active and working out. So impressed with what he had done, he continued and has kept on working out ever since! What a testament to his resilience and passion for exercise.

Focused on Health…

A year ago, Malcolm decided he needed to do more. He recognised that his weight had become an issue and wanted to make a change. His motivation was simple, yet powerful:

“If I don’t do something, I am not going to be here for much longer…I want to be around for my grandson and daughter.”

With sensible eating habits and hard work, Malcolm began to transform his lifestyle. He sought advice from Lifestyle Consultant, Dave, who recommended new exercises that would enable him to build muscle and tone up after losing weight.

“You’ve only got to ask, and the staff here will help,” Malcolm says, highlighting the supportive community at Skegness Pool & Fitness Suite, which has been instrumental in his success.

A Routine for Success…

Malcolm’s workout routine is both consistent and effective. Three times a week—Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—he completes 10 stations with a mix of resistance machines, weight exercises, and cardio. This full-body workout has helped him lose 3 stone and gain muscle. He’s proud of the progress he’s made.

“Last time I was this weight was when I was in my fighting prime, fighting nationally and internationally for judo, at 71 kilos. I am down to 76.”

Malcolm still enjoys little treats on the weekends but finds his new lifestyle deeply rewarding. It’s not just the physical changes; it’s the mental and social benefits, too.

“We have a little chinwag and put the world to rights. The staff and everybody are great! George and Dave have helped me tremendously.”

Reaping the Rewards…

Even after a fractured ankle, Malcolm didn’t let setbacks hold him back. He simply learned to adapt his exercises, allowing him work around the injury.

“You find ways around it…it is either that or give in…And I won’t do that!”

Now, at 80 years old, Malcolm feels fitter than he has in years. His dedication has even impressed his GP. At his recent yearly check-up, the senior practice nurse showed him a 20-year graph of his health metrics, and the improvements over the last 11 months were astounding.

“She even put a gold star on it!” Malcolm says with a smile.

Recently, Malcolm’s family gathered to celebrate his 80th birthday, a milestone he’s embraced with joy and gratitude. He loves spending time with his grandson and feels a renewed zest for life.

“I just enjoy life now.”

No Excuses

Take Control of Your Health

Malcolm’s journey is a powerful example of what’s possible with determination and effort. His message to anyone starting their own health journey is clear:

“You’ve got a choice…You can live and have a good life and make the best of what you’ve got, but you’ve got to work at it! Or… You can give in.”

Malcolm certainly did not give in… He chose to fight—and his story proves that it’s never too late to take control of your health and live a great life.
