International Women’s Day

/ Health & Fitness

This Girl Can, women-only gyms, and all-female training sessions. In a bid to see more women enjoy physical activity and sport, the Government and businesses have taken the lead in a surge of such groups, clubs and organisations.

Yes, the number of females taking up sport or physical activity as a hobby – be it a swim or becoming a member of a sport’s club – is ever-growing. But is that reflected in a rise in those women who see the sector as one that can provide a rewarding and successful career?

While the signs are encouraging, there are concerns in some quarters that the sports, PT and physical activity sector ‘glass ceiling’ has still not been smashed. One set of figures seems to back this up – 2018 statistics from the Register of Exercise Professionals revealed that out of 13,770 registered personal trainers in the UK, just 38 per cent were women.

Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre’s Operation’s Manager is Naomi Wilkinson-Baker. Naomi has risen through the ranks from a receptionist on a 10-week casual basis to her present role. Her 15-year progression saw her become a swimming instructor, a lifeguard and then senior lifeguard before being offered the managerial position.

During her career, she has been aware of a lack of women in the industry in general and is an advocate of narrowing that gender diversity gap. Speaking ahead of this Sunday’s International Women’s Day, she said:

“I want to see more females view this industry as one that, yes they can enter and yes, they can do well in,” said Naomi.

“I have been well-aware over the years that men far dominate in the sector and that should not be the case. At Meridian we have some strong and very good female Lifestyle Consultants, swim teachers and lifeguards and I would like to see more. If you are interested in this career, then go for it,” she added.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #EachforEqual, with the aim of promoting how individuals can collectively create a gender equal world.
